I have two asm's. One g1x and one g2. Never had any problems with them. The g1x has been running now for one year with no issues. Great skimmer.

Yes its diatoms. Its normal and should clear up as your tank matures. Hermits and snails will help clean it up.:)
The only thing I can think of is maybe have the water inlet dump into a filter sock. That has helped me in the past.8)
