When I had cyano on my chaeto, I switched to feeding the fuge with filtered water. Greatly improved the cleanliness and growth rate on my chaeto.

Surface agitation is to make sure you have oxygen in the water. If you have air stones and a protein skimmer, then you should have enough oxygen....
I feed mine filtered water and notice much less slime on my chaeto and get better growth now (did feed it unfiltered). I add a few pellets or flakes...
How old is the tank? How long have you had the fish? What are your ammonia levels? Do you have good surface agitation to get gas exchange?
