After seeing more and more lionfish while snorkeling in the rivers near her home in Jupiter, Florida, Lauren Arrington had an idea for her six grade science fair. She decided to see how salty the water has to be for lionfish to survive. The experiment involved six 10 gallon aquariums filled with saltwater. Each had a lionfish that she had caught. She then added freshwater to 5 of the aquariums each night for over 2 weeks. Her findings were startling: she found that the lionfish could live in water as fresh as just 6 ppt salt. This attracted the attention of local marine scientists who continued her experiments with similar findings. This may mean more trouble for local fishes from these invasive predators as they are now being found in estuaries around Florida. Read more details in the link below.

The 3reef gallery received some polish this evening worth noting. The categories from the old site gallery have returned - you can now look at pics of fish, coral, aquariums, etc. This allows for much more targeted browsing. Also fixed were odd gaps between images and there appear to be some new options since upgrading the core as well. Next for the gallery - video uploading. Stay tuned.

Pdxile came through with the photo-finish in the 3reef MEME Content with the reef-safe MEME. Well played. Enjoy the IM HydroFill ATO! And thanks to all 20 members that threw down for the MEME contest. That was a lot of fun.

This August we will give away the newest PLS-50 Nano Skimmers from Cad Lights Aquariums, the PLS-50 Elite. The Elite is an aggressive design completely ditching the traditional skimmer base with a side-mount that will work in sumps and inside aquariums. It is an interesting design choice. On one hand it makes vertical adjustments much easier by simply loosening a thumb screw to adjust. This is kind of brilliant and means you don't have to adjust sump water levels or make any more DIY platforms. But possibly on the other hand, you may have a skimmer that tends to lean or that looses vertical height. Stay tuned for a hands-on review. With easy adjustments via a tension lock, the new PLS-50 has great potential.

Welcome to the Cutting edge of protein skimming! From the success of the original PLS-50, we have set forth to re-imagine and re-invent everything so we can make it better. First we started by combining features only reserved for large full sized skimmers and...
