This is not exactly news to those with urchins in their reef aquariums, but urchins will wear frags as hats - ok - technically ‘pants.’ Regardless, they will take off with them if they are not really glued down. This is mentioned over and over on the forum, but I thought this photo sums it up well. It was sent to me by my family today. So while I have to sit at work, I can think of my urchin dragging this perfectly healthy frag all over my aquarium. Joy. ::)

Jacques Cousteau’s old underwater garage in the Red Sea is now a thriving coral reef. That seems fitting and a great tribute. In the early 1960’s Jacques and his team built the first underwater lab called the Conshelf I and spent a week underwater at 37ft. This was followed by the Conshelf II shown in this video where they spent more than 30 days. I read a bit on this in the fantastic “Life and Death in a Coral Sea” - essentially Jacques blog from his travels in the late 1960’s in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. I highly recommend this book if you can find it. From his ease at identifying everything he saw underwater by Latin names to numerous examples of his engineering genius, it is a fascinating read and provides great insight into this legendary aquatic pioneer.

Noting the red spots and strange protuberances, my first thought was that this sea slug creature could use some penicillin. Named “Floral streetcar,” apparently the owner thought so as well and I won’t go further there. Then to my horror, I scrolled down to see these pictures of this sea slug being fed brittle stars. So much for sleep tonight. Hopefully you won’t see this until daylight and can get it out of your head by nightfall. Read the amusing Google Translate below.

“Whole body is covered in projections of white and red, it is in a beautiful sea slug body and projections shiny shiny pale If you give a stimulus to the bonus.”

“Favorite food of floral streetcar is brittle stars.
So voracious, I eat even from fingertip approximating the brittle stars in mouth of floral streetcar that crawl the glass surface.”

Aussie Daniel Stoupin spent months filming coral to raise awareness of the plight of the Great Barrier Reef. Using a technique called ‘focus stacking’ he was able to capture incredible detail with awe-inspiring results. Although he appears not to be a fan of aquariums personally, his friend’s tanks were instrumental in allowing him to film in a way that would not have been possible in the wild. Take a look for yourself below. And keep in mind that each frame of animation of these hi-res images could take 10 minutes of processing time! Thank you for your efforts Mr. Stoupin. It was worth it.
