Who hasn't spent a long time trying to hide a big powerhead? I certainly have. A Tunze Turbelle 7200 in a 20 long? What was I thinking? ::) Well it is just about to get a lot easier with the new SICCE nano pumps hitting the stores right now. That is if you see them. They are very, very small. The Voyager Nano Stream pump measures only 2.35" long. Yet it kicks out 535 GPH. And couple that with only a 3 watt power consumption for what should be a big hit with nano fans this year.

The new SICCE Syncra Nano Circulation Pump consumes only 2.8 watts of juice, achieves up to 110 GPH and probably will be found on more than one reactor out there too.

• Max head: 2.3’
• Cable length: 7.55’
• Inlet & Outlet: (for in-line application) 12mm, 1/2”
• Self cleaning lubricated impeller

Solatube has gone big with their new SkyVault Series skylights - these big tubes are 29 inches in diameter! That is at least double the size of the ones I saw in person a couple years back at Reef-a-Palooza. Couple one of those with the new SkyVault Series amplifier and a diffuser and you are channeling some serious sunlight down. Can you imagine one of those over a big rimless cube aquarium? I can. More below.

Some smaller Solatubes over a nice reef aquarium

Solatube SkyVault Series

The SkyVault Series is a groundbreaking line of tubular daylighting devices designed specifically for large volume spaces with high, open ceilings like airports, convention centers, lobbies, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and retail centers. The core of the new SkyVault Series is the Solatube M74 DS Daylighting System. It captures natural light at the roof level, and transfers it indoors using Spectralight...

There must have been 50 things around me at the time this aquarium light caught my eye. Corals upon corals in tanks here and there. Dozens of people walking the aisle and giant banners trying to show me the latest and greatest. But before my mind could catch up, my eyes focused like lasers on something truly out of place ‚ carbon fiber. I couldn't believe it. There was a nice big piece of carbon fiber beautifully arched over what appeared to be a powerful aquarium light. This spare-no-expense attitude drew me in. I had just entered the the world of ReefLEDlights. Check out the impressive specs on their ReefSpectrum P47 LED light below.

It all started with the carbon fiber, but I quickly realized there was some serious hardware worthy of such a cover inside. If components such as CREE XT-E LEDs, Hyperon Drivers and Carclo Optics get you excited, then the ReefSpectrum P47 may be a light for you. My perspective is a bit different but certainly could represent a demographic for this...

For 2014, the new line of Cad Lights PLS protein skimmers, now in the third generation, will be a nice option for reefers with tight sumps or those just looking for a quiet, high-capacity skimmer. The first to arrive are the PLS-100 and the PLS-150. Both feature tension stop locks that address all the issues I had with the original design from adjustment difficulties to buoyancy problems with the skimmer body. And the PLS-150 allows you to get all the way inside the tube for thorough cleaning. All good stuff in a simplified design that actually creates longer contact time for higher capacity. If you need a skimmer with a small footprint, now is the time to take a serious look at Cad Lights.
