The use of the acrylic, bottom sealed box with multi-level holes, may allow water from different levels of the tank to be drawn in and filtered in sump. This may help reduce maintenance req. as more than just the top is skimmed.

    I think this may allow multi-level filtering, rather than just skimming the surface. It still may have the benefit of skimming organics of the top level, while allowing water to be drawn in and siphoned (thereby filtered with sump) from multiple levels... dunno, any comments?
