    Either that, or turn down the air intake to the point where it's not overflowing. You need a slime coating, so it has to run and get wet.

    It doesn't matter if you bought it from craigslist if it was dry when you got it. Skimmers need to build up a coating of bacteria to skim properly.

    You don't need more. It's a PITA to clean when it's too deep. If you don't clean it, you get huge algae outbreaks.
