I did it years ago and you are right it takes practice and crashes can occur.
Bleach evaporates.
I would soak it in bleach.Rinse well; then allow it to dry out in the sun.
If a headache is what you are trying to avoid I would say neither.

The first and third sand are dry sand which will need to be rinsed thoroughly.The second is a wetpacked "live" sand with bacteria present to help...
