To put a refugium with in the main sump is not a good idea . Keep them separate and have the refugium to drain into the sump. what size tank do you have ? Refugiums need very slow flow and the sump should be large enough to hold all the water from the main tank in case the power goes out and about 5 inches of depth is all you want in a sump and figure on the total volume of tank water need to pass through the sump about 5x's per hr. 4 x's is good but not much more or less

Well a 10 gallon tank will make a great sump and as for a refugium a 5 gallon tank or bucket even will do Just put about 4 inches of sand and a feed water supply and a drain so the fuge can drain into the new sump. As fotr materials ??? Depends on how you have the tank set up now. Is it reef read and drilled ? You have to get drainage to the sump from the tank. Get some pictures of what you now have and how its set up then we can go from there

LOL well after over 20 plus yrs of running either algae scrubbers or refugiums I'll assure you mine functions just perfectly and it requires nothing on my part. To much information out there these days and people always are trying to reinvent the wheel all in the attempt to out think themselves :) Whats tempered the entire tank ? The sump or refugium does not need to be glass I have set up many with the use of A rubber maid letter organizer storage box Lowe's 5.00 or so..

Only other option is to install a HOB overflow But the ones you buy on line suck as a rule never drain enough and way over priced the CPR is a PITA to get started. The sump you casn set a p[ump in the water as for the refugium get a little plastic box and a hole saw drill and drill that for the fuge.

so if i did your letter box as the refugium and the 10 gallon as the sump i should be good.
