I went to my local water store in the town that I moved to and found out that I can buy ro/di water for 15 cents a gallon. For $37.50 I can get 250 gallons of water. That may be cheaper than buying my own ro system. I went today and filled 10-5 gallon jugs. The lady behind the counter showed me the water test sheets when I asked how often the water was tested for everything. The water seems good, I will have to wait and see how everything looks in a week or so using their water. Just kind of happy to find water so cheap. Before it would of cost me a $100 to get the same amount of water where I moved from.

I'd say thats a pretty good find. But for me it's worth it to have a system in my own home. No more lugging buckets and it's much easier when I need to whip up some more water in a hurry. Like when I need to acclimate a species for awhile and I go through a bit of water from my display that gets thrown out and I need to replace it. It might just be that I'm a DIY freak and a chemistry nerd. But if you keep a large container topped off from the store you might not even need your own system. :)

That is a great price, but you still had to haul 400 pounds of water out of the store and into your home. IMO the value of the convenience in having your own RO/Di far exceeds their initial setup costs.

Make sure you do a TDS reading next time before buying. A lot of stores and suppliers neglect their filters. Old filters, and you could be getting something that is worse than tap.

For me it's worth the convenience. Something to be said for sitting down, watching a movie or getting some work done, and by the end of day, having water ready, all without leaving your house. And you KNOW nothing nasty like copper is in the water, or the LFS screwed up, and you have your TDS readings right in front of you without relying on someone elses word.

    Why ?

Man, first $40 is about a 1/3 of the price for a RO/DI system ?!?
Second, make sure the shop is not selling you only RO water. What your tank needs is DI more than RO. Only DI removes silicates and phosphates and keeps you out of algae business.

    Take care,
    Marian
