Hey everyone. I am new to the hobby and my plans are to get a 180 gallon saltwater tank. There is an ad on craigslist near me for a 180 gallon tank, the only catch is, apparently it was custom made for a turtle. So, it has a glass shelf and ramp built in. I am leery on purchasing it. Would this ramp and shelf be more harm than good for the fish. This could possibly make for a cool landscape of rocks. Anyone ever deal with anything like this? Suggestions??? Thanks in advance!!

like you said, I would think that the ramp and shelf would offer some very interesting potential for a dry land component. I think that the fish would be fine.

What i would be more concerned about is that it housed turtles...turtles are nasty, dirty creatures. Cleaning the tank to make it reef ready may be a real pain in the butt.

Actually, the lady didnt have any pictures and I didnt ask for any. I was going to go look at it, never did. I just found a 180 gallon near me, but they say its a california custom, and apparently it is supported with some thick glass in the middle of the top. Is anyone familiar with california customs? I am going to look at it tomorrow, will be taking pics. They also have a 55 gallon for 40$ which I think I will use as the sump.

i think this may work out in your favor, sump and big DT all together. i would use the glass shelf as a raised sand bed, 414-242 knows more about those and he says they are amazing, which i agree

OK, so, I am not going with the turtle tank like stated before. I will be getting a 180 Gallon tank I found on craigslist and the 55 to use as the sump. It currently is housing some freshwater angelfish. I will be picking the tank up sometime before February 3rd. It has a custom stand that comes with it. I will keep that for the mean time while i build my own. Im thinking of a black stand with some stainless steel doors.

On the top in the middle it does have a piece of glass, very thick, i tried to get a decent pic in the 2nd photo. Apparently that is what actually holds the tank together and not the black decorative plastic around the top.
So, with that in the middle, I was thinking of dual overflows, one on the left and one on the right? As for the return to the tank I was thinking of one in the middle? I think that makes the most sense.
