I have 2 Coralife Hydrometers. One I've had for years, the other I just got a few months ago. At first, both would get the same results when I tested the same water. The last couple days I have test my water and my original hydrometer shows 1.021, while my newer ones shows 1.019. I think the old one is right because my floating hydrometer shows around 1.021. How can I fix the newer one? Thanks.

Get a refractometer and your problem will be fixed ;) Hydrometer's are wildly inaccurate, specially the floating ones!

I also have two meters. I have a Hydrometer(HM) and a refractometer(RM). The HM reads 1.026 and the RM reads 1.030. I do agree with PackLeader, RM are much better and accurate.

DA DA DAA sostoudt to the rescue.:idea::idea:
put tap or ro water in them, what ever one is closer to 1.000, is more accurate.

WHAT? That doesnt make sense. If you put FW in either of the meters, they should read zero. Luna

yes they should but, if you put 1.026 water in a hydrometer it should read...well 1.026 but this, most of the time, isn't the case.

100% pure water has a SG of 1.000. I think that is what he was trying to get at.

specific gravity is always one with pure water.

its zero with parts per thousand(but who uses that?)

edit: its good not to confuse people because if your salinity is 1.025 ppt thats just a tad low
and if your specific gravity is 35 thats just a tad high also(you want some water with your salt :))
