You have 30" of length do divide up. You add an inch to the diameter of the skimmer and make the first wall there the optimal height that the skimmer calls for. Then inch and the bubble break. Another inch and another wall the height of the first. Then 8~9" for the return. Then a wall a few inches lower than the rim for the fuge.

My setup goes [__9"__|_|_|__9"__|____20"____] Pictures above only L to R instead of R to L.

    That SC150 a HOB?

If you use a flexible tube as your down pipe, and put some holes in it just above the water line, you can avoid using that annoying *air bubble sock* which just makes more work to do. I suggest starting out with the simplest design you want to get involved with. That way, later you can explore more innovative options if you see fit.

I like the fuge in the middle, but either way as big as possible for it. i think the 9" from above is a little much. Most return pumps can fit in a 12" by 5" section. For the skimmer you should try and get one that is recommend for a tank that is bigger then your current tank. Get the footprint for that skimmer and make the skimmer section based on that. I dont remeber which one it was but I saw a good size one with a footprint of only 11"x4.5". Congrats on stepping up to Diy it.

Most people use Plexy/acrylic cause they are scared of glass. I found that they have window pane replacements that are like 12"x12" at Home Depot. Easy to trim off to fit and bonds better.

I follow the opinion of less flow though the Fuge for harboring pods and the such. Letting most of the flow go though the skimmer section. The 100gal skimmer my friend was looking at was 7" in diam and the 150 was 8". The cone skimmer I want is 7x6.

I would go with glass for the baffles, any glass shop cuts them cheap to whatever size you need. Silicon bonds to glass much better than acrylic so less chance of a failure. For the baffles, my 20l is divided 12" for skimmer (1.5" bubble trap with 2 baffles to save space) then my return at 8", then my fuge at 8". I wouldn't personally go any smaller than 8" for return because this is where you sill see all you evaporation. At 8" I still have to top off everyday, I can sneak every other day, but by third morning the return put is sucking air. IMO the bigger the return section you can afford the better just for that reason. Of course there are always ATOs, but its all your choice.
Best of luck with the build,
    Jake

Does anyone know how wide the inside of a 20L is? I need to buy glass to partition it out for my sump. Also, how tall should i make the area for the skimmer and for the refuge. I will have the overflow going into the skimmer area, and the refuge on the opposate aide being fed by the return pump with the flow controlled by a ball valve.
