    so i currently have a coralife PC light with a 65watt 10k and a 65 watt actinic.
i am thinking the bulbs are due for a change, but rather than replacing them i am thinking about upgrading the light.
    it is a 20 long tank (30x12, 12 deep)

would this be way too much light?
    1x 250watt DE HQI 15000K
    2x 24watt T5 actinic

should i just go with T5 setup?
    2x 24watt 10k
    2x 24watt actinic

of course i would like the option to house anything and have it thrive.
i wish i could find a 175watt halide setup for a real good price, i am pretty sure the 250watt is overkill.

    thanks guys!

first one is too much, the most I would use is the 175 but it must be a foot or so above the tank.
the 250 will burn every thing in the tank even the fish.

I would just go with a t5 set up.

Personally I would go with the T5's but if you would consider other options I would go LED on this tank. With LED you could have any coral you want and it would be only around $200 with two of these panorama fixtures here.

i was thinking about possibly an LED setup, found some pretty good articles for DIY builds but i was a little sketchy on how good it would be. those strips seem to be a pretty good price (not much more than the DIY parts would cost).
i was just not sure about how many LEDs i would need and if a strip like that would cause dead spots in the tank.

I have one of those strips over a 92g corner tank and when the other lights are off and only that one is on, it lights up the tank pretty good. Two of those strips is equivalent to three PAR30 bulbs and since a 20L is so shallow you should have pretty high PAR even at the bottom of the tank.

wow, that is looking like it might be the best option...gotta love not replacing bulbs, and the lack of heat.
i wish there was some sort of amazing chart that compared types of lights and certain tank size conditions for beginners like myself.
i thought the coralife light was going to be amazing, i should have done mroe research before that purchase.

so after some reading, i am thinking 2 of the ecoxotic might be enough light.
i am curious about the placement of the strips.
    the strips are 12.75”L x 1.5”W x 1.75”H and my tank is 30"x12"
should i mount them side by side giving me a single row that is closer to the tank width?
or double them up in the middle?
or stagger them so there is some overlap in the middle...

from what i have gathered with only 2 of the strips on my tank it wouldn't be sufficient light for SPS.

Place them side by side to get as much coverage as possible. Get 4 if needed.

What about a 70w MH HQI? And maybe 2 T5 actinics..

so this is a response directly from ecoxotic:
"Absolutely, two modules will be plenty of light for a tank of your size with LPS corals."
it looks like i will start out with a couple of them (since my budget is capping out at $200). then if i come up on some demanding SPS i could always add another module in the future.

a 70watt halide would be an option, but the ease and no bulb replacement cost of the LED's seems like the way to go.

    thanks for the help guys!
