Hey, I'm going to try to make my 29g FOWLR tank into a reef. This will mainly be for med light corals as the lights have are ok but nothing very good.

    These are the lights- http://www.petmountain.com/show_prod...tm_term=515778

I have 2 clowns and a firefish as of now along with snails and hermits. Also I have a couple zoas but nothing special and they seem to be alright but over the last 4-5 months I havn't seen any growth or anything.

What are some things I need to do to make the change to a reef tank?
I don't have a sump so reactors and stuff like that are a no for me.

I was thinking of using kalkwasser- would that be a good idea. I know your suppossed to add it slowly- would I be able to use the tom aqualifter? First mix the kalkwasser with 1 or 2 gallons of RO/DI water and then pump it in for like 20 mins? Since it only pumps 3.5g/hr? Or would that be too fast in a 29g system?

What other things will I need to do to prepare for a change from FOWLR to reef???

    Thanks alot!

The biggest change for a reef is the lighting which you already have. If you dont already you should begin monitoring and maintaining: Carbonate hardness, calcium, and magnesium.

You will also need to pay very close attention to nitrates as most corals dont do well with more than 50ppm in the water.

I'm ussing instant ocean salt mix right now do you think that is fine or should I switch to a reef based salt?

I'm getting a mg test soon as thats the only thing I don't have

What do you think about using E.S.V. B-Ionic 2-Part Calcium Buffer Reviews

I've heard good things about it.

IMO I think with that size tank if you purchase premium salt and do 10% water changes each week you should not need to use kalkwasser with that setup. You could actually do some harm if you are not careful with your levels. Beyond lighting you might want to look at some type of protein skimmers. I would also watch your temps as it does not take much to make a major fluctuation with 29 gallons of water. The best thing you can do is perform regular tests and do water changes. Add items slowly 1-2 pieces a week and make sure they are reacting well.

    Good luck!
