I am looking at getting a 300 gal tank, I will leave out the brand for now but I am worried about the glass thickness. Like I said it is a 300 gal 8'x2'x30'' starfire front and sides but the glass is 1/2'' is that good? thanks

12mm or 1/2 inch sounds about right for that size tank

Sounds Bare-minimum. But maybe starfire glass is stronger than regular glass? I have no idea. But I will say this - my 120 tank has main panels that are 4'X2' and they are 1/2" thick. For something almost twice the size, 1/2" sounds like slight underkill to me.

A panel thickness is based largely on the panel height not so much the width. We have a 430 gallon tank at work and those panels are 8' wide and 40" tall and 3/4" thick.

But if the Starfire glass is stronger than regular glass - it my be ok.

Should be a 3/4" bottom glass with the 1/2" sides.

Check the caulk in the corners and pre-fill it with water to check it out.

I would also clean it out with bleach too especially under the rim.

I would say that is about standard fare for that size tank.
