    Hello All

I was wondering if anyone has put a 3D background into a Reef tank? Is it even possible is my next question. I build a ton of these things for friends and my own FW tanks, but I wanted to venture out in the Salty World.

    thanks

A diorama would be cool on the back of a reef tank. Don't know of anyone who has most likely because of all of the equipment that we have attached to the back.

I am betting that it could be hidden. What do you think?

you can make your own rock and use egg crate to make a live rock back wall with shelves and caves for different things. Is that what your looking to do?

I build my backgrounds out of Styrofoam and cover in cement. I have plenty of examples, but sadly not with me. I am at College with no tank.

I just saw a thread yesterday where someone did a shadowbox type background on their tank, let me dig around in my posts & see if I can find it...

Found it, sending you a PM since it was on a different forum.

You could do it as long as you did it with reef safe materials, ideally live rock, as that would also cover biological filtration, hiding, and all of the other benefits of live rock.

I am going to give it a whirl this Winter Break. I am going to make my own rock and build it as if it were a part of a much larger reef. Thanks everyone for suggestions. Will post pictures when I start.

yes this is actually quite common. you can take eggcrate, spray on this foam, then cover with rocks and small gravel/crushed coral/sand. Looks like a natural wall. I will get you some links
