I'm very similar to Horton actually - did freshwater for years and years, started salt in the early 90's - did a reef for a short while and then had FOWLR up until 2 years ago and switched back to reef.

Does keeping the goldfish you win at the local Church fair as a kid count?! I've always had some sort of a tank. Had an Oscar for many years during grade school- high school. Then I ventured into owning a iguana up at FSU. Didn't get back into fish/SW tanks until I moved back here and a friend gave me his 55gal upright five or so years ago.. Been downhill from there!

Started freshwater around 90 and switched to salt around 96. I like to beat my head against the wall so perfect hobby for me!!!!

If I had a huge tank I think I would make it freshwater and have an arowona, clown knife and some oscars and throw in some convicts. Had all these in the past. Mater of fact my wife helped me put down a 10 year old Oscar(was last fish alive and I did not want to do it as I had it from 1") when we transitioned to salt. Thing was a beast! Sold the clown knife at 18".. Damn thing would throw a gallon of water when I put in feeders(they are crazy fast).

Ah the memories. Still think I should setup an old style undergravel with a couple magnum filters, some florescent lights ad hang on skimmer and put some of these new school softy tanks to shame! People bash those setups but I ran 1 for years and it was 125gl of mushroomness!!!!!

Technology is good but not always better!

I had random freshwater tanks since 96 then got into breeding boas and designer ball pythons. I always wanted the ocean in my living room so I jumped in "head first" with my salt 3-4 years ago and it's my passion. I love this hobby, the people in it and if not for this forum I would not have the tank I have today. Plus the support from family and my wife has helped tremendously.

I started with freshwater about 1952, and started my still running salt water tank in 1971.

We also had freshwater tanks growing up. I remember bringing home a crayfish and putting it our tank at home and never seeing it again, until years later when that ONE rock was removed. haha

Fish have always been of interest of me, not so much fishing.... hmmmm
