    Chiming in...

A 5 gallon fuge will and will not work. For the purpose of reducing your levels of nitrite/nitrate it works to a certain degree. Meaning...It's better than nothing.

But in my experiences, water evaporation and power outages will play key roles in making your reef experiences a little bit harder with a 5 gal. I had to manually top my 5.5 gal everyday with water. And if there's a power outage, depending on the setup of how your fuge drains and returns water, you're looking at an additional carpet cleaning bill. Needless to say, my 5.5 turned into a 30 gal soon after.

If it's chaeto you really want though, there are threads around here that show you how to take the ghetto-fabulous approach and use a suction-cupped kitchen sponge holder to hold the macro in their display. That should hold you over until your fuge plans become solid.

Best wishes in all your reefing endeavors dude.

You need to take the clowns back asap. Please, if your going to ask for advice, do not throw it out the window. As said before, you are going to need at least 40 more pounds of rock. If you want to save a little, order up base rock, it will become live by the time the cycle is complete anyways. Then you have to let that cycle. The cycle will last 4-12 weeks. If the tank wasnt filled until 12/16, it should have been probably a good couple of weeks after new years until you added fish. And, that would be assuming you had gotten everything else in order.
Get the clowns out, and get your rock and flow issues addressed. Then, let it sit and cycle. While this is going on you should also NOT be running the skimmer OR filters.

I would wait another week or two at least before adding anything. If you had 2ppm ammonia about a week ago you may still be cycling. Take it slow, don't rush.
