Forum: I wanted you opinion on a 55ga tank i will be looking into purchasing later today locally from craigslist. It is seemingly a good deal to me it includes the base and a sump for the price of $125.00. What should i be looking for in a reef ready tank?

In addition i was reading a thread which stated that 55ga usually are two narrow for a reef setup. So my quetion is how narrow would be two narrow for my project?

Once again thank you for the input

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
It looks like a nice tank.

I would ask what they used it for fresh vs salt, just so you know

Good price, what type of lighting comes with it ?

I would check seams and for cracks and chips.

I was told it was originally used as a reef tank by his cousin he now however used it to house a turtle. Unfortunatly no lighting is included but this will be a project for me and have time to gather the need equipment.

What do you think about the hang on o/f vs built in? which is more reliable?

Thanks again for the feedback Corailline it is appreciated.

Do you know how it was hooked up to the sump? Is it drilled ?

IMO drilled with overflow to sump is the best. But some HOB can do a decent job, kinda of a large tank but can probably be done.

If you are going for a mixed reef, you might want to calculate the price of lighting appropriate for reef into the equation.

Me neither, kinda of confusing. Two HOB and the sump, I think the extra tank is not designed as a sump for that tank and he is just selling as so. But I would buy it and work with it, probably make a decent tank out of it.

the tank is a great price and the stand.

if you are looking for a reef tank. just go off of this for me
    i have a 30g tank reef tank.

    the filter was 300
    the liverock was 150
the canopy i build for 35 builds if you want to buy one for your tank thinking about 280
    and powerheads for me 60
    sand 30
    lights were 320 with bulbs.
    and heaters for 30
    650. is the total.
and this is with out fish and corals
and my tank and stand was 200 so you are getting a great deal.

and a reminder this was for a 30g not your 55g

The only issue many people have with 55s is that the width does prevent decent aquascaping without rockwork touching the back glass
in a wider tank, you can afford to sacrifice the space behind the rockwork, and still have plenty of swimming room towards the front

having said that, it looks like a bargain to me, and I would be tempted to try it and just select rocks that are not to large (or break larger rocks up in order to get better fit in the space available)

Thanks dellyjoe I agree it looks like a deal hopefully it is leak and somewhat scratch free ill see it later today. (fingers crossed)

steve wright I understand im hoping the depth is at last 12" or more he was not sure of the dement ions and is not a salty hobbyist. I agree with your assessment for the space and yes with my daughters inherited 24ga I had to do as you mentioned sledge hammer the L/R to allow for the space on the back glass.

Thanks again fellow refers for the feedback appreciate it as a newbie
