Okay, so i didnt know where to post this, but i was thinking..Does everyone out there acclimate their stuff they get from an LFS or local reefer? I got a ton of SPS and aton of coral yesterday, didnt acclimate one of them..The most i did was a 5 min float..Everything that i got opened up within an hour..

hey... I have 2 LFS near by and they both tell me something different, the 1 said not to worry about acclimating inverts/corals, the other said to acclimate for 30 mins or so. just to be safe in acclimate for temp and add some tank water a few times for about 30 mins...has worked for me, but not sure of the right way since the 2 LFS contradict each other.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I only acclimate my sps to temp, as long as I know the pH of the tank and sg are stable.

What is Mucho important, is dipping and inspection. Trust me you eventually get Red Bugs or much much worse, monti eat nudibranchs or acropora eating flat worms. Red Bugs easy to treat the other much easier to prevent than to treat.

I float most of my coral except the expensive rare ones I by then I drip then. My red hornet zoas actually had about a 5 min float and then right in the tank and opened in 2 mins it was Awesome. I was a little worried though at 35 a polyp lol

I'm assuming the risk of issue largely depends on how different the two systems happen to be. I'm sure that's not the only factor--it's never that simple. But, I'm guessing there's less stress involved in transferring animals from a healthy local source to a healthy hobbyist tank with similar parameters. Does that make sense? :p

Can livestock live and thrive without proper acclimation? Absolutely. Do you have to acclimate? Nope.

However, low/no acclimation introduces stress into an already stressful situation. The amount of stress is dependent on a number of factors. Not the least of which is the type of livestock. Some animals that live in tidal zones experience wild temp and salinity swings multiple times per day. For them a 10 degree temp change and 20% swing is easy. For other animals such a swing would be extremely stressful and could lead to disease or worse.

The question should not be "can you get by without acclimation?" but rather "why wouldn't you acclimate?"

I acclimate all my corals. Also dip them on coral-rx before putting them in the tank. They open up quicker for me that way.
