I have a 38 g tank, 2 perculas, and 3 damsels. I was wondering if I could put in 3 chromis at the same time that I take out the 3 damsels and then add 2 more chromis in a week with out adding too much biological load. Also, do chromis need a predator to keep them in a school. I read they need to be scared to stay in a school.

I think it will work out. I had 3 chromis, and one vanished. The 2 I have left always hang out, but the 3 didnt. If you have 5 they will probably school better. Ive also read they will not school with out some fear. My cinnamon clown chases mine, but that didnt make the 3 school better. I read some were they will slowly kill the others off, until there is only a male a female left. Im sure that is what happend in my tank.

You should be able to add them all at the same time as the bioload will not be to dramatic!
They don't need a predatory fish either to have them swim in schoals in my opinion! It is there nature to do so, I believe! Their are Blue and Green Chromis'! The Green are more common and less expensive. They make a wonderful addition to a reef tank especially!! Because of the dimunitive size and temperment they will make a wonderful addition to your tank!

but you dont think 5 will be too many for a 38 gallon tank with 2 perculas right?

Nope as long as you have a good skimmer and decent biological filtration!

nope, you should be good. chromis stay small, and dont add a big bio-load.
