hey guys, I added a jawfish to my tank yesterday. Havnt seen it since, I guess he's settling in.
Anyway, I feel like it would benefit from having a slightly deeper base to the tank. Its currently between an inch n a half to two inches deep. I already have a spare bag of crushed coral. When I wash it, it'll be with tap water, I have an RO unit but it produces water very slowly. Will the washed sand be ok to add straight to the aquarium or will the chlorine/contaminates still in the inevitable wet sand be a problem?
Would really appreciate some feedback :) thanks

IMPO I would rinse it with RO water. I dont think it is worth the risk. If you rinse it with tap and put it in the tank you have the potiential to add phosphates, chlorines, and contaminates from the water.

I agree with the RO wash. If possible, do it this way.
Mind you, when I set my own tank, I didn't even rinse the sand at all. Never had a problem that I didn't cause myself ;)

    dont rinse it

the very fine dust in there is going to provide a lot of real estate for the bacteria

how long has your tank been up?

this type of thing should be done in stages, just add a little sprinking every other day
allow it to settle and clear and then add a little more IMO

good method to get the sand down without creating to much mess is
put the sand in a polybag or jug turn off water flow , lower the bag or jug and just pour very gently over the existing sand

If your adding crushed coral, wouldn't crushed coral go on top of the sand sort of like gravel?.

i have poured sand in my running fresh water tank before, i just pierced the bag that it came in in the lower corner with the tip of a knife and cut the opposite other corner put the whole sand bag in the tank and the sand flows automatically. 2 things you have to take into consideration, 1 the upper hole has to be submerged, 2- move the bag very gently and as close as possible to the bottom. it will cloud the water but depends on how careful u follow the process

Thanks for all the posts guys I appreciate it! I went ahead and slowly poured a little sand into the bottom of the tank, and it hardly caused any debris floating around, ill add some more gradually. All good though, thanks again all that replied
