Hey.. new to saltwater aquariums. Just set up my 29 biocube about 5 days ago and started my cycle. I had some concerns from another section in this forum when I showed some pics of my setup. A possible manjano and aiptasia problem.

    1. Carpet?

I have no idea what this is but I am pretty sure it is my carpet which I must have taken when I turned the camera on.

    2. Aiptasia? I think these are moving occasionally but I could be wrong.

These guys are tiny. Maybe 1/4 inches tall for the tallest one. they are reddish brown and only located on one rock really.

    3. Manjano? It definitely moves could it be another type of anemone?

They range from dime to nickle sized are brownish red in the center with greenish tips that glow in the moon lights.

    4. Also seeing a lot of green only on certain parts of the rock.

I noticed on a thread on here that you should cycle with the lights off..
So now they are off! I have been running the lights during regular daylight hours and shutting off or moonlights at night. Should I be concerned with the amount? or just go with darkness and let it cycle without interruption?

I did buy joes juice to kill the bad guys because I am pretty convinced that I have at least one of them probably both kinds. :( Thanks for taking the time to look at my crappy photos! Hope they are good enough for an ID of some sort.. I'll have to get a better macro lens some day. ;D

Your correct. the top are aptisa and reproduce like no other. The 2nd ones are majanos and they grow slow and will move if they dont like where they are. aptisa control and joes juice work but only controls the issue. I got a aptisa eating file fish and it cleaned the whole tank in four months. Hes in a 120gallon, i also had three peppermint shrimp that help out to. and the last picture looks like GHA. I let mine grow and grow and grow with my cycle and it consumes all the phosphates in the water and than dies off. IMO i think you should cycle the system with the lights....

    Hope this helps

I had a very small Majano problem in my reef and used Joe's Juice to get rid of the 2-3 I had, never came back & luckily haven't seen any again.

wow, thanks guys. I guess I'll get to killin! I did want to have a shrimp eventually anyway. I was thinking a cleaner skunk shrimp but perhaps I will try a pepermint shrimp or two instead if they will help. Do you think 2 in a 29 gallon would be enough space for them?

Plenty space for 2 pepps AND a skunk cleaner IMO.

Whenever I see any Aiptasias in my tanks, I inject TM Elimi-Aiptas directly into the stalk as opposed to into the mouth. I find that the product has a better kill rate when injected into the stalk rather than the mouth.

I'd be a little careful ever adding some to combat a controllable issue. In my 55 2 out of 4 of my peppermint shrimp had a taste for LPS corals and decimated a frogspawn and blasto frag. They luckily came back, no thanks to my removal of shrimp from the system. Alot of people have no issues, but alot of peppermint shrimp also don't eat aptasia either! Just food for thought bud.

Thanks all! I blasted them with some joes juice and they look pretty unhappy. :D I may get pepermint shrimp if the problem returns but that would be way further down the road. I'm still cycling right now. If I do end up getting them and they pose a problem I will give them up for adoption. At that point I will probably just have some cheap starter corals anyway.
