Holy crap there is alot of false information on here! The ak does kill more people then the at every year only because it is cheaper and widely distributed in the middle eat and Africa. Not because it is a better round.

Ar- better accuracy and moddability. Price point typically starts at 600 (not 1500) which would put it toe to toe in cost of a decent ak. The caliber choices are there and you can find many in .308. The .223 is a biscuits round on humans especially if you buy high performance bullets. They can easily penetrate a wall and you would be silly to shoot it on a house with your son there Cosmo! If he is out then go for it :). Anoter huge advantage is the cost of ammo is SO much cheaper. This is another reason I prefer a 9 over a .40. Way cheaper and it will kill just as easily. For those that say it is to small then I would say they don't know ballistics and the gun on my hip most often is a .44 mag

AK- darn cool gun that doesn't need modding. Easy to find and it will go ban every time. Contrary to belief it is not more dependable overall, sand just doesnt give it issues whereas the soldiers use condoms on ARs to keep them functional. It is pretty cool to pill an AK out at the range.

I disagree. It depends on how it's used, if you use it to cut plants probably less human deaths. A nuke is probably more effective, one because the person controlling it doesn't have to go into war, and two it makes more collateral damage. I would go with the gun that's more accurate and has the longer range.
    edit- what about the AK74?

Good points guys! Should have clarified better. I have my 12g shotgun for typical home defense. The AK/AR would be for when SHTF scenarios.

I love the mod ability of the AR15 for sure and looking at getting the rock river AR15 for about $1000, but first I THINK, not positive yet, I'm gonna get the AK.

From what I've read, the AK and AR aren't that far off in accuracy under 300 yards. Over 300 yards the AR seems to definitely shine.

Pretty sure over the course of the next year or so, I'll have both. Have to fit my Desert Eagle in there somewhere. lol, I know, but I just really want one.

Thanks everyone. Keep the info coming, its still a debate in my head.

Wow. This thread is a poster child for mis-information and rampant fact-less opinions.

Where and what are you getting all that for? The cheapest I'm finding is the Palmetto Arms kit for about $600, BUT, I'd wanna upgrade a decent amount of the stuff to the tune of about $300 more to start, not including a good red dot. And then I'd have about as much as an entry level Rock River. Thx for the info;)

Good point, for home defense get a knife and slip under your pillow, that's what I do, I use stealth since I'm not large or powerful, but intimidating, ever heard me imitate a lion or bear or red tailed hawk;)
A gun IMO isn't the best home defense, IMO it's "knowing the land", an intruder won't know about your way back yard or special room. Just get outta there, if your trapped just hide.

In a perfect world, I'd get both, and yes the AK bull pup is a blast to shoot. BUT, here's my thinking. I can get an AK I'd be more than happy with for about $600, and then load up with about about $200 for extra ammo and clips(ya know before the election cycle starts and armageddon crazies start buying everything up) So call it $800 done.

But the AR that I'd settle for/be happy with is gonna run me about $1250, plus about $200 for the ammo, so were at $1450.

Now LG has me looking at SKS's lol!

And yes hinged thinker, I've read a TON of stuff over the last week, and not sure where some of these opinions are coming from. IMO, the accuracy and stopability of both guns are pretty good.
