algae?

    Coraline algae competes with the bad algae we hate and is better looking. So, yes I'd say!

    I would think that a certain amount of diatoms (aka phytoplankton) are necessary in that they feed the micro fauna and some corals.

    phyto isnt algae, there animals. algae is plant life. we dont want diatom. so is there any algae we do want? other than that mentioned already

    Nope, phytoplankton are plants and diatoms make up a large portion of phyto.

    Phytoplankton: Plants of the Sea

    Zooplankton, on the other hand, consist of "animals"

    there is no such thing as a good algae in a reef display tank aside from coraline.its fine in any other kind of sw tank.
