Aloha From Honolulu

Ive been checking out different reef forums lately and 3reef seems like the best one for me! Ive just set up a 55 gallon tank with several peices of live rock (legally obtained of course!) that are seeding other peices of rock. Ive kept and bred many different types of freshwater fish since I was a very young kid, got my marine bilology degree in 2002 and just realized that Ive never had a saltwater aquarium! After a lot of research, Ive decided that a live rock tank with live sand and a plenium underneath is the way to go for myself. Ive caught several juvenile fish and have been raising them in a 10 gallon aquarium to get them used to captivity and will transfer them into the 55 gallon when I have cleared them of any ich (January 14th) by placing them in a tank with very low salinity (specific gravity 10.12 or about 17 ppt). So far I have 1 Chromis vanderbilti (more will be added ASAP), 1 small dart fish that is still too transparent to ID (more of these will be added ASAP as well) and 2 scareface blennies (Cirripectes vanderbilti). All of these fish are juveniles that I caught as post larvae.

My pics show the 10 gallon aquarium, then the 55 gallon, then 3 pics of my live rock. When the fish are cleared of ich, I will transfer them to the 55 gal and I will turn the 10 gal into a refugium for copepods. Once I get that all worked out I will then hook both tanks up. I will definitely be looking for advice on that project!!

 

looks like you got some macro algae there. I love the fact that you can get fish from the ocean. Setup looks nice, good luck with it.

Welcome! Looks like you're off to a good start! And 3Reef isn't just the best for you, it is the best, period! The only thing I would suggest is checking your local laws very carefully; Hawaii has very strict harvesting laws, and what you are doing may be illegal
