heres a thought... keeping your own reef; are we part of the problem or what. i have no clue where my corals or fish are from how many 3reefers know where their corals/fish are from.

dont get me wrong i love the hobby but how can we help if we are buying what is being pulled out..or are we

    gimme your thoughts

The reefer may infact be a savior in the future. When the goverments in these areas have a huge loss of tourism and other cash flow related to the reefs they allowed to be destroyed they may have to turn to an industry which can supply diverse organism which can be returned to the reefs after they put protections in place.

This may lesson the tragedy you saw here.

In 2005 i went to Jordan, it's in the middle east. While there i had the privalage to dive some of the most beautiful reefs i have ever seen, and i have dove in every corner of the planet. We stayed at a brand new navy base (the only one in Jordan) that was created by filling in a huge portion of a pristine bay. However prior to building it the king of Jordan had every piece of coral moved to a sanctuary 1 mile away. He placed very strict controls on the amount of particulate in the water they created by construction. Each piece was placed back into it's original location with the exception of those directly in the fill in area. Those peices where set up in the new sanctuary by marine biologists to crate an entirly new reef system.
It was AMAZING to see what they did. the corals seem to love the concrete piles they used, on one side of the pier which ran parrallel to the shore the water was 60ft and on the other it was 170. this made a unique area were you could see corals and life from all depths in a very small area, SUPER COOL!
If your a diver go to Jordan, if the entire middle east was like this country we wouldn't have any problems there.

Do to a computer crash i may not have the photos i took, i have to search my laptops and sticks, if i find them i will post them.

thanks for the vid. I belive that an uneducated aquairest is more destructful then an educated one. Us that are trying for a better reef will make the best impact and maybe save the natrual ones. It is only by better understanding that we can help, for those who don't care can only hurt. Coral swaps and active breeding is the wave of the future for this hobbie it is our part to take part in that.

when i frag i always think theres one less to be taken. if you belive in globle warming and the sea level does go up 20 feet and the reefs die off us hobbiest will be the only ones to replace it just a thought!!! nice video i found it interesting thanxs.

Heres my take. I think that most hobbyists are infinitely more proactive in the protections of reefs than others. If you are in this hobby you obviously care about reefs. The relatively small amount we take from the ocean is negated in my mind by the amount that hobbyists do to protect it.
