yeah problem with seahorses are that they are so slow at eating that unless they are in a species tank they will starve to death. They will see the food that they want....think about it...watch it...swim a little to eat....watch it more....suck that piece in....and repeat the steps. By that time, the other fish have got that piece of food and then some. The seahorses have lost all interest in the food at that point

You can have a few types of fish in with seahorses...certain gobies, bottom feeders like mandarians and things like that which will help keep the substrate down. Clown gobies are really good I hear and am going to get some for my seahorse tank

Also be careful with any pumps you have in your tank. I would not recommend placing any extra powerhead inside your tank. I had lost a seahorse once because I had to treat my tank for red algea...and did not want to risk keeping it in the tank while I treated it. So I thought it would be perfect in my sump of my big tank...lots of pods and stuff to eat. Well, unfortunately it got sucked into my skimmer and died. I had the same experience with a second seahorse where I had modded a powerhead and placed it in its tank..well the mesh slipped off a little and it got its tail caught in the head and killed it. Seahorses like to hatch on to any and everything including powerhead fans.
