So with me being at my parents house for the summer, they've fallen in love with my RO/DI unit and want one themselves. Before they always ran to walmart and used their Culligan water. They have a 55 gal freshwater planted tank and a smaller 15 gal freshwater. I've never purchased from purewaterclub.com so I'm not sure how their products are. They're not looking for anything fancy just something to get the job done and is cheap. I saw one for $98 under their aquarium section that I was thinking would be good for them. I personally purchased mine from Spectrapure back when they had an amazing sale and now their units are a little out of my parents price range. They would like to stay under $100 they said.

Yes, I cheapened out and got one. It works just fine. I did have to use plumbers tape in a few areas to seal fittings. And I have had to do the same to one of two di cartridges each time I replace them. If they use rodi water they will need to put back electrolytes and minerals since pure water will injure the fish and probably kill the plants due to lack of minerals. There are products available. I think one is called roright.

For that price, they should probably just buy one from HD or Lowes.

Yea, I just picked one of these up also. I don't have a TDS meter right now so not sure how well its working, will have to get one soon. I did have to take out all the containers and re-adjust the O-rings to fix some leaks. In the process of setting up the tank as we speak, so well see how it works out.

Pure Water Club is very low end, its probably OK for drinking water only but is nowhere close to a reef quality RO/DI.

You will not find anything worth owning in the $100 range in a RO/DI, $169 is as low as you will find and thats the 75 GPD Premium, BFS-161 from www.buckeyefieldsupply.com .

When you set the two side by side there is no comparison. Look at the micron range of the filter and carbon block, the fact Pure does not tell you what membrane they use (no secrets no surprises), the full size vertical 20 oz refillable DI versus little dinky horizontals, TDS meter, inline pressure gauge, capillary tube flow restrictor, John Guest speed fittings, NSF rated filter housings, etc. No comparison.

With RO/DI you really do get what you pay for.

He did say this would only be used for a fresh water tank and not for a reef. Would that filter be ok for freshwater?

Even for freshwater its still very low quality. The purpose oth the prefilter and carbon is to protect the RO membrane from damage and extend its useful life. When you stick filters in front of it that are about as effective as a screen door you are not doing much for protecting it and thus will end up replacing it sooner. The cost of ownership goes up substantially meaning had you spent a little more upfront for a better unit with better filters you would have actually spent less money over time.
Its sort of a pay me now or pay me later scenario so if you plan to keep the RO or RO/DI for more than say 18 months its well worth getting the better system as it will be saving you money at that point.

I use a unit from pure water club. Does it work? yes. Does it give me 0 TDS? yes. With that being said I am disappointing with the low end parts. It took a roll of plumbing tape and some time to get the fittings to stop leaking. I would not recommend one unless you just want the cheapest thing that works. I would personally not purchase another unit from them.

When the membrane clogs I will buy another unit but most likely Spectrapure.

I have soft water from my city water so that helps. I get 0 TDS from the unit also.
