One thing you might look into is renters insurance. It would cover any of your posessions in the event of a break-in. At FSU, our off campus appartment was broken into and we lost a computer, game system, tv, stereo system, etc... Renters insurance wasnt too expensive and may be added to you current insurance policy...

Renter's insurance for a student like yourself is usually dirt cheap too.

I'm on my Dad's insurance while in school, and he has renter's insurance now. I assume I would need to get my own renter's insurance? And this probably wouldn't cost much anyway, thanks for the idea.

Seano, you definitely want to get a roommate then all costs get shared. Plus many times heat is included in rent in cold climates...you pay a little more that way for rent but it's worth it not having to budget that cost. I think your grocery budget is a little low....that's only $30 per week....it sounds good in theory but if you're eating healthy and you're a young male - your budget should be higher imo. With a room mate and getting an apart. that's not a dump, I would figure at least $400-$550 in rent (800-1100) per month. My oldest son makes $160 work for electric and cable with some left over for groceries.....again, this is split with a room mate.

I'm originally from Lakeside. Are you familiar with it? I apologize if I've asked you this question before. Many of my friends went to BGSU- this is many, many years ago :) just mentioning because I'm familiar with your college :)

Part of the reason rent might be lower is because it's a small town. A college town, but small nonetheless. And $800-1000 a month would get you a nice house here (beside the fact that I don't know of any part time jobs I could get that would be able to afford that). I could see $550-600 as a *high* end of the rent budget for 2 people. Meaning I would be paying $225, versus 300 or 350 for a 1 bedroom.

I'm having a difficult time finding a roommate, however. Most my friends are freshman(freshmen?) and will be living in the dorms next year. Those who aren't have already made roommate plans (as far as I know). :-/

Yeah, I don't know where lakeside is. I don't think I personally know anyone from there.

It sounds like you can live very reasonably there. Sorry you don't know of my hometown :( it's near marblehead and port clinton. I'm sure you've been to put in bay? It's on the mainland across from there but closer to across from kelley's island.

it sounds like you have a good budget in mind then. The cost of living is good there it sounds like... where are you from in northwest ohio?

The lady friend lives in Port Clinton. :) Never actually been to Put in Bay though.

I'm originally from Columbus, OH, but we've moved around a bit. I've been in Tiffin for the last 10 years.

I thought I might have had a roommate, yesterday, but then that fell through. I'm looking online for apartment in my area.

It looks like most 1 bedrooms go for $320-$350 per month depending on size and location within town.

I found a listing for a 1 bedroom, 1 bath over a storefront. It's in the middle of downtown, right next door to the public library, within walking distance to campus, has water sewer and gas paid for. $340 per month. Not sure whether it has electric.

I'm going to the ResLife office tomorrow on campus to talk to them about the on-campus housing appeal. I got my FAFSA info back and literally do not have the money (loans/grants) to live on campus next year. I can afford tuition though, so I'm hoping they'll work with me.

I've applied for 6 scholarsips and haven't heard back yet. I filled out another application today which applies for 36 different scholarships. I will find out in June/July if I get anything from those.
