Well I'm 27 years old and live in Rockford IL. Cost of living is CHEAP here but living on your own is never cheap sadly.

    Here are my payments,

    Rent - 675 (1brd w/central air/heat & garage)
    Gas - 65-80 (Winter) 30-35 (Summer)
    Electric - 65-75 (Winter) 165-200 (Summer)
Internet - 55 (Comcast Business Class)
Insurance - 14.95 (Extra Coverage for 4 Laptops & Tank)
    Groceries - 250-300

    Congrats on your grant!!!! :)

Thanks, Ryan. Does the renters insurance you listed include the extra cost or not? I just have my own laptop plus my tank, trumpet and bike. I think those are the really only valuables I own

Renter's insurance is a good idea for other mishaps that may happen not just protecting your valuables...in case of fire, other issues like busted pipes that may destroy things and for theft. It also covers you in case something may happen at your house (although I'm sure this won't be an issue for you ;) like parties that may go awry (sp) and things get destroyed or someone gets injured on your property......

OK, I will be sure to get that then. $10-20 per month isn't much to worry about.

I can't wait to move in already. :D I want to plant a garden and have sunflowers in the front and I can cook real food and stuff after having been in the dorms for so long. :) The extra space will certainly be nice as well.

Sorry, I seem to have missed this post previously. Please tell me $1700 was the total before split between roommates. That's still a lot to me, but Columbus is also a much larger town so rates will generally be higher. The total rent for us will be $1400 split between the 5 of us. And that's for a 3 story house with a yard and 2 car garage.

I talked to my roommates about the house even more recently and we're all pretty excited about this. It'll be my first real place on my own and we've got lots of plans to make it look nice.

Hi Seano. I just visited Columbus on Friday. My oldest son moved there in May. Got to a bit of the city this time. Other visits have usually been located in downtown for education stuff. He lives in the Old Towne section. There are really nice sections of the city.

When do you start back to school?

The first day of classes is August 26, but I'll be moving back on the 10th hopefully, so that way I'll have a few weeks to get settled in and make the house look nice. :)

And then we'll never hear from him again.....

Enjoy these times, my friend. Grab every moment to have fun. These ARE the best days. I never thought so when I was in my 20s and 30s. I had no desire to "go back".... but then you hit 40 and you'd do almost anything to look that good and feel that great.

I wish I had of gone base jumping......

You're going to have an awesome time.
