If you can get by using fans then by all means do but it will only take one time for the water to heat up. It all depends if you have easy soft corals or your raising SPS's. Your decision!

Also the 2 and 6 fan configuration that Luna post are pieces of junk...do not buy. I have already have made that mistake trying to cool a quarantine tank.

I was also considering buying a chiller...after talking to a nice and I must say "HONEST" tech at marinedepot, he recommended I use a simple, cheap clip-on fan...if your goal is to lower the water temp by 2 or 3 degrees..the fan will work wonders...I bought a clip-on for 14 bucks, I didn't use the clip-on piece, instead I DIY a base and attached to my wall on an angle so the air would hit the water and also blow the heat generated by my T5s...my temp now is at a crisp 77 degrees....14 bucks.....the chiller I needed to buy for my tank size.... $420 bucks......the marinedepot tech guy has gained my eternal respect and I'll be shopping there and only there from now on.....

The only thing you should keep an eye on now is your evaporation in the tank. You can cause a large salinity swing if you don't watch it. ATO are a must if you are using fans for cooling.

I found one about 30 miles north of me on ebay 2 years old used on a fresh water planted tank ( didn't know they heated up that much ? ) 250 $ and no shipping looks like new I guess for that price I will use it as a emergency plan . Maybe set it 2 or 3 deg above normal tank temp and it shouldn't run much .

Agree with the clip on fan doing the job. Another option that I do at home is to fill a few big zip lock bags with water and freeze them. Drop them into the tank - they'll float. Then you simply refreeze them once you're done. We go on to using frozen 2lts coke bottles as well...works just fine. Try it and lemme know!

The only problem is you have to be home to do that. It will work for small systems as do the fans. It all boils down to what you keep in your tank and how much time and money you have invested.:-/
