Given Metal Halide with Actinic combo at ~8 watts per gallon with the lighting ~5 inches above the water:

    Mixed corals with SPS/LPS/Zoaies.

How far below the water level should the top of the aquascaping be?

You can probebly grow SPS on the bottom of the tank with that much lighting..you might burn the tips if you get to high....I would do it about halfway up the tank...But you dont need to have it all the way up the tank..about midway to a lil higher will do.

You can do it as high as you want, but just make sure to place corals accordingly and acclimate them slowly to a new spot.

it can be sticking out of the water or just a few inches above the sand... whatever floats your boat.

I ask the question wrong. I would like to know what would be the optimum height for the aquascaping for maximum number of corals.

As others have stated, there is no genral spot just whatever you think looks best. With that being said, I like my rock just a few inches from the top of the water. Gives the tank a more full look when you add the corals.
