My baby ceriths are much smaller than that, but that doesn't mean anything. Looks like it could be a cerith. What are you afraid it might be?

Yeah, it's too hard to tell. Here's some good pictures of pyramid snails Picture of pyramid snail - Reef Central Online Community Looks a lot like the one you put up...but it's hard to tell. Also, I have no idea if this means anything or not, but none of my baby ceriths have white/cream shells. They are all black. Didn't you have a mysterious clam death a few months back?

    Hey Dingo,

The second pic is ALMOST good enough to tell for sure which it is, but not quite. They are either rissoids (good) or pyramidellids (bad). You happen to have found one of the species that could be either one, based on shell shape and sculpture. I'm sure you've already read the article on how to separate them, but it goes like this: if the protoconch (the first couple of whorls at the apex) appear vertical, or 90 degrees from the plane of the rest of the whorls, your shells are pyramidellids. If they are all in the same plane, spiraling the same way, they are rissoids. You can see this through a cheap microscope set on low power, or you can take one out of the tank and take its pic on macro setting, then blow the pic up on your computer. If you can get a clear pic of the protoconch, it will be easy to tell.

    Cheers,

    Don
