Just curious what y'all prefer, glass or acrylic? I think I want to go with glass so when I use silicone it will bond to the baffle and the side wall of the aquarium.

I did glass my self for that reason. My local glass shop cut me 4 baffles foe a 29 gallon aquarium and dulled the edges (can't remember the proper term) all for $25. Super easy!

Wow that's awesome, a lot better than the $60 sheet of acrylic that I have to cut.

I used glass as well. I went to a local glass shop and had them cut 5 pieces for my 30G sump. I had them sand the top and clip the bottom corners. That way I did not damage the silicone used to hold the tank together.

I used 1/4" acrylic from Home Depot and they have been in place about 7 years now no problem.

I am in the process of building a 55 gal sump and I am using 1/4" glass for the baffles.

I also used glass for the same reason. About that same time I was building it, bje (another 3reef member) had his acrylic baffler at the fuge section gave in and caused all of the mud, sand etc to go all over the flow and display... so after reading quite a bit about the bonding of the silicone to the glass vs. the bonding to the acrylic, the glass was the obvious, better choice for me. Spend about 20 bucks on all 4 glass cuts at my local glass shop.

Acrylic. 27+ months later and still snug as a bug in a rug. How much force do you think is being exerted on the baffles? Building an acrylic sump with silicone would be bad news, but using silicone to hold the acrylic baffles in place is absolutely not a problem.

The bad news with glass: If the glass baffle is even 1/32 of an inch too big, good luck jamming it in. Acrylic: Just use sandpaper to take a little off and you are good to go.

Well I plan on taking 1/16th off each edge and just putting a hefty bead of silicone on it. Great idea about the bottom corners, that's brilliant. About how much room should be between the bottom of the sump and the second baffle plate of a bubble trap? 1 inch? 1.5 inch?
