started filling my tank yesterday around 5pm (w/ro-di) and am so excited, anyway my ? is, my base rock is 10 year old live rock that i have kept, around 50 lbs i sprayed the dust off with a garden hose, is that going to effect the tank ro water and if so should i dip it in a bucket of ro water before placeing it in the tank or do you think its overkill, will the tap water leach alot of bad things back in my clean ro water? thanks for your thoughts...

I would dip it in ro just to be safe. Look at it this way. It can't hurt to do it.

I would definitely soak it and may want to soak it in a mild solution of bleach(make sure to rinse well after) as well! But make sure to soak it for a few hours atleast to minimize the chances of introducing something bad to your water.

I would soak it as well. Who knows what it has picked up in that length of time. And good job in keeping the base rock for that length of time. Saved yourself some money there!!!

no problem, when you say mild bleach do you mean like a cap full per gallon of dip water?

If you decide to soak in a diluted bleach solution I would soak or at least dip in RO water after.

Even if you bought base rock, which onilne is about $2-3 per lb, that's $100-150 you saved, if you bought it at a store, you are looking at more like $250.

I would definitely rinse it off after soaking it in a bleach solution.

I use a different protocal than those mentioned above. I rinse it off with a hose (not RO water that is going to be used in the tank), then soak it in salt water that I also throw out. You don't want to save all that money on the base rock only to have to completely change out the tank and the new water. Anyway that's my opinion.
