How important is it to keep bigger sized shells in your fish tank for hermit crabs to move into? if they outgrow their current shell will they for some reason die without one or is it just to protect them from your fish that like to pick at them?

If I am correct they need them. They sleep in them and they hide in them so yea they need them. (I wasn't talking in circles lol) I would go buy some shells from your LFS they should have them cheap or petsco/petsmart

+1-- hermits need bigger shells as they grow. When their old shell is too small and there are no empties lying around, they will fight other hermits or kill snails for a new home. If that fails, they'll end up running around without one, but the stress will most likely kill them before anything actually attacks.
