You can keep them in. Basically the ceramic rings just provide surface area for bacteria to grow on, mostly for FO tanks. But you could also put carbon in those trays.

well thats sorta what i thought but its got carbon in it already . so i was thinking of putting some phosban in a filter sock to put in it.. would that be a good idea?? is there anything elese that would be better?

Hi rwill92 - forgive me if your already aware of this, but the carbon will need to be changed periodically - it becomes exhuasted and cannot absorb any more - depending on qty of carbon and Bio load

Phosban or any other phosphate/ chemical mediums can also be used in the power filter - although having a seperate reaction chamber is often a better option - the media is not as compacted as it would be in a net bag in your power filter thus more area is expossed to water

I used Rhowpos many years ago in a power filter and in order to achieve the reduction to 0 that I targetted , I needed to run 3 lots of it one after the other in my power filter ,whereas with a proper reactor in the set up, I would possibly have got away with single treatment, maybe 2 at most

thanks! its ok,but yea i already knew that. well i thought a filter sock would kinda restrict the water flow so i thought about leaving the one chamber for carbon and the other for the product you said or phosban that way the flow is better. my filter is divided into two chambers (side by side). any more advise ??/ thanks again!!

rwill92 - Yep your idea works OK - IMO- You will need something to keep the carbon in the filter, take care with inferior grade carbons as the water movement grinds the granules up and they get spread around the tank ( hence most people put them in a sock, net bag or sandwiched with a layer of filter material over the carbon
