Jafo, do you know what exactly happen DURING the cycling???

Things are not always the best when it works or "tried and true". There are better ways to cycle a tank without putting a fish in the water. Listen to the others here, they know what they are talking about.....and then some.

Thread hijacking is when you take a thread/post toward another subject.

I also used a cocktailed shrimp to cycle my tank.
    Sorry about the hijacking too.

Well last week my water test showed ammonia getting high....Fish were looking a little inactive...I had bought some Biozyme just out of curiosity about 3 weeks prior to the test but was reluctant to use it ...I threw some in looking for a quick cure and it seemed to liven them up ... I'm still over due for the water change, which is going to happen this weekend and I haven't tested the water levels since either (been busy) But no deaths in the tank. So as far as cycling goes.. I really don't know..But it seemed to have a positive effect for me.

P.S. I'm not keeping coral yet either

    TIA

MARINELANDS Biospira is a product that I've heard some good things about but have no personal experience with. It's live bacterial cultures and it must be refrigerated otherwise it will spoil. That leads me to believe that maybe it works, where as the other products are not refrigerated leaving me to wonder how the bacteria survive or go dormant. I'm not a microbiologist but I am a Physician and understand some thing about bacteria. Of course I could be totally wrong.;D

I used bio-zyme with 110 pounds of live rock, I'm not sure if the product did any good.

Actually, I was thinking about using that to seed my Aragocrete rock. I currently have about 15 - 16 lbs of LR in there and it's gonna take at least a few months before they become 'Live,' so buying those should boost my bacteria population up....if they work that is. :)

See I guess you right, maybe I should read and learn. However, if you know your Nitrogen cycle you will find a big problem with the dead cocktail shrimp. If thats the case dump a Bud into the water, that will start a cycle. I piece of wood will start a cycle, heck pee in your tank and that would start a cycle. Alot of things can start a cycle, does not mean it's the best or the correct way to do it.

If you do want to get into a detailed discussion about a nitrogen cycle, I will be glad to have one here on the boards and we can compare notes. If you do stump me, I'll admit it. Remember bacteria multiple in response to food and die from lack of food. To keep the nitrogen cycle going you need food for all the bacteria, hence why you need a live fish.

Your tank, not mine so you can do what you want. I have been doing what I recommend for years and know people that have been doing it the same way for alot longer than me. It works, has a proven track record.

I will admit, I am new to the SW world and only having mostly experience from reading; haven't found/read a big problem with using a dead shrimp to cycle my tank.

    Exactly! Thank you!

    Shrimp's also food.

True, you are recommending your experiences/knowledge and that's good, but it's better to give more explaination your statements than "it is what it is." That will HELP other to make up their mind with what they are going to do to THEIR tank.

I am by no mean trying stump you, just a friendly opinion from me. Sorry if I offended you. Didn't mean to.....:)

    Later!

    "Shrimp's also food."

Yes it's food, but it's not for what you are trying to do. You need to read up on the nitrogen cycle and you will see what I mean. Many things can START a cycle.

True or false, everytime you add a new fish/coral you have a mini cycle?
