Yes, i know actinics are better and i should go with them and i will. But i want to know if black-lights do anything at all for any creature.I just want my question answered and not a bunch of people saying forget blacklights and go with actinics.sorry if i am sounding rude but i don't want this question turning into people telling me what to do and what to get.I am just interested about blacklight nothing else,I know all about the other lighting methods.
    thanx

Black lights emit mostly UV-A light which is in the 320-400 nanometer range. Actinics emit light in the 420 nanometer range. I don't have any factual or scientific data on hand noting the effects of UV-A light on photosynthetic corals so I won't comment on how it will affect your corals. But to sum it up, by adding blacklights you will be increasing the amount of ultraviolet light your corals are receiving. I would think that the deeper in the ocean a coral is found then the less UV light it would receive because water filters light. After all we do put glass shields on HQI's for the UV filtering purposes. So i guess that the question now is what are the effects of excess UV-A light on corals.

I know this doesn't directly answer your question but maybe it will help. Maybe not. :)

This is an intersting topic and I would be interested in seeing some scientific data if you happen to find some.

Just thought I should mention that it hasn't been proved that Actinics or Moonlights benefit corals. Both of these lights are more for aesthetics.

i read this side of the argument too. Seems it was only observed that corals do better with acts. And since it made them look nice we kindof assumed it was also beneficial. Confusing....

as for backlight, with the article and everyone else, it is more damaging then beneficial.

i never heard about that argument. sounds like it may be more benificial to run all 1000k or all 2000k? has anyone experimented with doing that? or know of an artical?

I don't know if there is an article from a reputable source but I've read anecdotals from other forums. For now I side with actinics and it's use for decorative or aesthetic purpose, beneficial or not.
