I used a plastic screen frame and clear mesh. The clear mesh lets a lot of light through. Very cheap and easy!

Oh and congrats on your new, gorgeous fish!

When I was at the DVRC Frag Swap last week, Marc Levinson gave a presentation on lighting, with numbers taken with a PAR meter. One thing he found was that PAR is relatively unaffected by glass, and nearly completely unaffected by 1/4" acrylic. He lost 1, count ONE, PAR when he measured through the acrylic.

I'll also tell you that my BSJF jumped thru a 1 inch hole in an acrylic sheet over my QT, so you really need to minimize the gaps; I wouldn't trust eggcrate.

good to know. i was curious what the difference in par through glass versus acrylic would be.

The glass was something like 3 PAR lost, out of the ~850 PAR....like 0.03% of the PAR lol. He was using 2x 250w 10k(?) MH and a 400w Actinic MH.

I was able to find the glass tops the aquarium came with. I'm gonna try those out and see if the heat doesn't built up inside.. The back does have about a 2 1/2 inch gap though(for the overflow tube). Thanks everyone. If it doesn't work out with the glass I'm gonna try out the screen.

Also it's a bowfront so making the screen top might be harder then just the usual square.

BTW, my BSJF was fully-grown when it jumped through the 1" hole, so make sure you've got them small enough, and cover very tightly around any holes already in it with a custom-cut piece of acrylic, glass or mesh.

No, I didn't find him until the next morning . It could have only been the 1" holes in the acrylic, because the top on the QT was just a sheet of acrylic with 6 or 7 of those 1" holes in it. No other gaps, unless the tang or something else jumped, and the BSJF followed and made it through the even-smaller gap that would be between the tank and the top.

He was my favorite fish too.
