Are we talking about a Hippo Tang?
Their are other Tangs called a blue Tang!!!!!
Powder Blue, and an Atlantic Blue as well!
Tangs will grow pretty slow, plus alot has to do with feeding.
I don't see why you couldn't go with a Tang in your 46 gallon tank!
Make sure it is in good condition and is eating at the pet shop!!!!! Also make sure that it has been in the pet shops tank for a week or so to be sure it has made the transition from collection to shipping for best results!!

I have never had a hippo to ever touch anything in the tank except known food .. Not many tangs I will say that about and I have had coupe of them in my time. Also I have never had a tang to out grow a tank. Ours hit a wall in the 46 gallon tank and held there until we moved them to this 180 and still after 3 yrs they are not that large are less then 4 inches in size..

I had a young hippo tang and he would harrass the hell out of other tankmates such as my clarki (he would lose this battle) and my yellow tang in my opinion he could be aggressive at times. But overall a good fish :)
