How long has your tank been set up?
    What are your water parameter?
What kind of filtration do you have?
    What kind of lighting?

    etc etc

If it's a 7 week tank you could A. Just be finishing your cycle, or B. just be having a mini cycle that people sometimes get after the real cycle. Diatoms would come at the end of either of these.

Generally a week to a month. They aren't a huge concern other than that they're ugly!

Doublecheck your params and carry on!

Yep sounds about right. I had mine start appearing around the 7 week mark. I just threw in some hermits once there was a huge mass of the stuff. they ate it off of the sand and live rock. I scrapped it. after another week or two it pretty much just faded awayl

Diatoms feed on silicates. Once these are depleted from the water column, they will die off and you won't see them again until more impurities enter the tank. RODI water should be used if you are not already and the brown you see is actually the skeletons of dead diatoms. The clean up crew should get rid of those in due time.......not to worry. This is completely normal.

I seem to be having the same problem just my sand has turned brown right now but i feel like it happened over night. I have had my tank for 3weeks and i have two hermit crabs in there. My ranges are also fine. I guess i will just leave it an see what happens
