    Hi Guys,

im sure you have heard of this problem, so please help as i have tried my best to get rid of this problem. My entire tank has for about two months now been covered in this furry stringy dark brown algae. I am making about two water changes every week with RO water and cleaning the algae off my live rock with a suction tube as i make my water changes. I t just keeps coming back. It is now a lot less than it used to be but it really is doing my head in as i want to fill my tank with coral, but dont feel that i can while this annoyance is still here. Please help! i have attached pics for you to have a look at.

I don't see the pics? It sounds like cyno bacteria, a very common problem, particularly in new tanks. How long has your tank been set up for? The common causes are excess nutrients in the water, you can cut back feeding/do water changes; poor flow in the area; old light bulbs. Can't be sure it's cyno unless we see a pic.

Well, those pictures aren't the best but I'd say it's cyano. My boyfriend had a problem with it, but after some light upgrades (actinics) and increasing the flow it went away very quickly. My new nano had that gross brown algae that you always get at the start, and when I switched to actinic lighting it went away very quickly. Good luck

Try doing a google "image" search for cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates. Get back to us and we'll go from there.
