Just received the starter pack and was wondering why it contained a 1 gallon mix of mag and also a 20 oz mix in the kit (and they only provided 3 1 gallon jugs and not a 20 oz one for the additional mag). Per instructions is to use the 20 oz mag after dosing the full 1 gallons of alk & cal but nothing said about the 1 gallon mag? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

BRS sells great stuff at reasonable prices however I would dose what is necessary to achieve the desired levels and mix the gallon Mag. first. After you get an idea of how much your system is using on a daily basis it will not matter how much of each you mix and after the gallon is gone just mix the 20 ounce next with 20 ounces of water. It may or may not be necessary for you to dose Magnesium but its level is what keeps the Cal. and Alk. in solution.I like to keep my Mag. roughly 3 times what the Calcium level is just like NSW.So if you plan on a 450 Cal. level then you will want a Mag. level of around 1350.;)

i'm alittle confused by the question.
You dose Mag, CAL, ALK all at the same time as needed.

But i think i know know what you are asking, now that i thought about it.

To create the Mag mix. You actually use two differnent powders and combine them to make the 1 gallon solution of Mag. Not sure what they are called off the top of my head, but i assume it is the "extra" mag mix you are talking about.

Thanks guys. Making more sense now. Just got a bit confused why there were a gallon size and an additional 20 oz with the cal / alc package. Got the pre measured packs.

The Magnesium that comes with the starter kit is premixed and only needs water. The reason you get a 20 ounce Mag. is most people weren't dosing Mag. or understood its importance. It was also recognized by BRS that alot of Mag. was needed in order to maintain proper levels so they added an extra gallons worth.
The Magnesium in your pouches is actually a combination of Mag. Chloride and Mag. Sulphate. Most of us buy it in bulk but it does require the measurement of each in different quantities.;)
