    Hello everyone,

My 30 gal. has been set up for about a month now, went through the diatom bloom, and now I think I may have a case of bryopsis :bigcry: I've been doing a lot of research on it, and it's really depressing if I have to deal with this already...

Just thought I would get an ID from you guys before I try treating with mag or Algae x. Also, I don't have any fish or corals yet, just a few hitchhiker feather dusters and a CUC with lots of snails and a few blue leg hermits.

Should I even bother with mag treatment and just go for Algae x? What do you guys think?

    Thanks,
    Gabby

PS- sorry for the bad pics, all I have is my cell phone camera :/

The usual progression of tank algaes after a cycle IMO is

    Diatoms

GHA ( which I think you probably have )

    Coralline

In that order. If it GHA it will probably get worse before it gets better.

    :)

Looks like bryopsis to me. I had a very small outbreak after my cycle. I removed as much of it as I could manually. Then I kept my lights off for 2 weeks, elevated mag to about 1500 and viola. No more byropsis. This was a very small outbreak though and had not come back yet. Keeping my fingers crossed. LOL

I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but the algae has a feathery look and it doesn't just 'wipe off' I have to pull it. I really hope its just hair algae though!

Darnit... well, I guess I'll have to start treating... Should I start with mag. or go straight for algae x?

I was hoping to just try mag first (since it's cheaper) and just wondering if I should get 2 bottles or if I would be fine with one 16oz bottle? I haven't done dosing before, so will one bottle be enough for me? I'm on the PA checkout page right now :)

Sorry if these are silly questions, but I really appreciate your advice!

I would just use epsom salt. Much cheaper and you can get it anywhere. I use BRS products for dosing but just to raise mag for your issue I would just use epsom salts.

Bryopsis imo, just go for the mag treatment. Since it's a new tank, you have a perfect opportunity to get rid of it early.
