I thought it was weird too, since my system is all new. My live rock is Timora from Premium Aquatics, Base rock came from my LFS, which I boiled and set out in the sun for 2 months, and my sand is CaribSea arag alive (or something similar). I have a feeling it came on the live rock from PA because that's where the majority of it is growing, which kind of disappoints me because I thought PA was a very reputable dealer :/

Live rock is live rock Gabby , and Forrest Gump will tell you
"Its like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get"

but on the positive side , you have a tank with no livestock, which means you can now make some choices that would be harder if you got this with a tank full of corals

    1) Kent Tech M , increase your mag to 1500 , and if that doesnt not start killing it off in a few days, you can go up ( Ive recently seen a detailed account of how a level of 1680 reduced a rock full of bryopsis to next to nothing in 4 days with that level)
once you have done that, water changes to bring your mag back down to 1450 - 1500 would be an OK starting point for when adding corals IME

    2) You could remove the rocks affected , boil them in a large non copper pan, scrub them off, and then leave them to dry outside ( if your in a sunny climate like me, rock will bleach inside 1 week left outside)

    3) you could discard the rock you have, and replace - not the best option, but an option that is open to you, as you have no livestock yet

Buy Kents M Tech (no other mag will work) get your Mg up to around 1700. If your bryopsis is Mg sensitive, it should start to dissolve away.

Also, if you're heading towards a reef, then your Mg will be up high enough to stabilize Ca and Alk.

Thanks guys! Yeah I knew there were risks involved with getting the live rock- but hey! At least it will be a good learning experience, and when I beat the nasty stuff then I can help someone else out!

I got Kent tech M today and am going to start treating tonight. I will update this thread if/when I see results :D

+1 in a young tank just keep the lights off. you can keep the lights off for weeks on end and it wont harm your coralline. Fish acclimate better to dim tanks anyway if you plan to add fish first.

diatoms will return though when the lights come back on

    good post John

how long do you think lights would need to be off to ensure Brypsis would die off?
and then not return when lights come on again

with a new tank, no livestock - this sounds like its probably the most convenient method IMHO

Just thought I'd add my experience with fighting bryopsis with MAG. I had corals in the tank, so keeping the lights off wasn't an option. At ~1550 -1600 it took a few weeks to see a noticeable difference. The method still worked well though.

The lights would just accelerate things.

Well, I was out of town for the weekend, and came home to...

    My bryopsis dying!!!!

    Hooray!!!

I'm not really sure what my mag levels are at right now, because my mag test is difficult and doesn't seem to be giving very accurate results, so I have just been doing the math and my guess is somewhere between 1700 and 1900.

I also found a couple little things that look like aiptasia :(

    Pics coming soon :)
