I purchased a used 75 gallon aquarium that has two bulkheads. I`ll be using this tank for a refugium and only need 1 bulkhead which will link up to my sump. My question here is that how do I know the bulkhead is properly screwed in and won`t leak? I have an overflow on my display so I don`t know anything about bulkheads, lol.

    Thanks!

You can check the tightness but a water test is the only sure way.

make sure the rubber ring is inside the tank....also lick the rubber gasket first,it helps seal it to the glass

lol lick it :p ... You should be able to hand tighten it until it stops, then turn it a half turn more. Fill it up and look for leaks, if it leaks turn it a little more. Dont use any sealant or anything on it.

I dunno about licking. Eew! The bulkhead gasket DOES need to be inside the tank. Never use silicone or grease. Hand tighten, then test with water. If it still drips, tighten a little more until it stops leaking. If you find yourself tightening more than say 1/2 turn, you may need to purchase a new gasket. Don't over tighten and crack the tank! Gaskets are cheap, tanks are not.

The gasket needs to be on the flange side of the bulkhead, it does not matter if its insdie or outside, just against the flange. Install the gasket dry, no lubes or silicone.
Hand tight plus about 1/4 turn usually does the trick.
Here is a sticky post I have done on Bulkhead Installation Tips which is very helpful.
