    I used a barb to male threaded adapter screwed into a gate valve, then a male threaded to pvc slip adapter to run the hard pipe. here's a pic of my setup. BTW, this is from my build thread that hasn't been released yet so this is a sneak preview. lol ;D you can't really tell that there is flex tube on the return pump but you get the idea.

    And for glueing the PVC I used purple pvc primer and them pvc cement. Came in a pack of each at lowes.

    yes, 1 1" drain with schedule 40 PVC will flow just under 1000gph. I think it is actually 980 gph.

    1" drain with 3/4" return is what my 90g had on it.

    I went with 2 1" drains on my 200g and a 3/4" return. As it is, my second drain is not used, but a back up, as planned.

    not as smart as others but i have a 75 plumbed with pipe. i have a 1 inch internal overflow with a 1/2 inch return. i use a mag 7 and with no adjustments my overflow is almost silent. my tank is in my bedroom so trust me it is quiet or the wife would not have it.
